INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR
You have seventeen stories to share with readers; why did you put this collection together?
Two reasons! First, I wanted to prepare one convenient volume of my short fiction as a thank you to my readers for supporting my work so far, with a half dozen extra stories that they haven't seen before. Second, I wanted to craft a perfect introduction to my work for new readers.
You have a variety of narrators; why do you like writing from human and non-human perspectives?
I've always loved sci-fi and fantasy's ability to explore humanity from a unique perspective. Androids in particular have always been a favorite of mine to read, watch, and play in video gamesand I love writing them. Usually android stories hone in on the importance of free will, the role emotions play in life, and human dignity. Exploring these themes from a variety of angles is fun and exciting. I also love bringing human elements into sharp relief, and sci-fi's backdrop is the ideal place to do that.
Three genres are represented in this collection: sci-fi, fantasy, and horror. Why these three?
I've loved science fiction for a long time; some of my best memories are watching Star Trek: The Original Series with my family. In high school, I was the non-conformist reading Asimov's Robot novels when Stephenie Meyer's Twilight took the teen scene by storm. I went on to study physics and pre-medical disciplines in college, so integrating these scientific subjects into my writing was only natural.
Fantasy is often described as the flip-side to sci-fi's coin, and branching into this genre has expanded the way I approach stories. I also happen to be surrounded by fantasy authors, and their influence has rubbed off on me.
Horror adds an edge to sci-fi and fantasy that captivates me more completely than lighthearted tales, and I love being fully absorbed into the characters and setting of a storyand a frightening component is the best ticket to get me there.
In all my stories, I've striven to craft top-notch fiction that thrills and delights readers with memorable characters, detailed settings, and rich plots.
