Frail Flesh

Frail Flesh is an emotionally charged book that will reduce you to tears and leave you breathless. This, I believe is Sinmisola Ogunyinka's best book yet. I love character driven plots. That's what drives this book; two intriguing characters, Otto Alexander and Roan Joseph.

20 years ago, her life was almost destroyed by one selfish and senseless act perpetrated against her. She vowed never to have anything to do with all men, that is, until she met Otto Alexander, thrice divorced playboy and father of two. Their lives spiralled out of control, in a whirlwind of romance. They were perfect for each other and nothing could possibly go wrong but the ghosts of the past; the secrets of 20 years ago unraveled and threatened to destroy the future they hoped to build together such that even love was not enough to save them.

This book is a tear-jerker and choked full of emotional scenes. The author fully explored the characters; persenting them as realistic and yet exciting as possible within a fictional setting. The issue of dysfunctional families and its effect on the lives of people is brought to the fore. Almost every character in the book was affected by one man's wrong choice. Frail Flesh portrays romance at it's best and the power of love, forgiveness and restitution. Love is not weak and spineless but strong enough to weather the toughest storm. Otto and Roan proved that through and through when they clung to the love they have for each other against all odds.

Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down until I was done. In her characteristic fluid and skilled writing style, Sinmisola delivered a hard hitting book that dispels the logic that we can make wrong choices in life and get away with it. And so apt is this memorable remark, "Forgive me. Please forgive my frail flesh."
