Craig Wilde has relied on his secretary for everything, for as long as he can remember, and, although he has never been blind to her beauty, he has never entertained the idea of a romantic relationship with her. "I've never seen you this distracted before," Gwen replied, her expression growing serious as she gazed up at him. "And I know I promised not to meddle in your private life, but I just want you to know how happy I am to see you thinking about something besides the business for once. That's all I've ever wanted for you, darling. I know you think that you need to be the backbone of Logan Enterprises, but you can still have a life of your own outside of the office, with a woman who makes you happy, a woman who can make you smile the way you were smiling in ..."
"You know, your version of 'not meddling' sure seems a lot like 'meddling', if you ask me," he cut her off with a teasing laugh, thankful that she had not come right out and asked him about his relationship with his secretary, or worse, gloated about his inability to remain faithful to the woman he was dating. "And don't get any ideas in that head of yours," he tacked on with a chuckle. "Nick's been my secretary for years. It's only natural that I would worry about her. So, I suggest you get rid of all those wedding ideas running around inside your brain."
"But ... I never said ..." she sputtered.
"You didn't need to," he broke in, laughing at the indignant expression which had crawled onto his mother's face. "And can you kindly call off your three stooges as well? I really don't have the time or the energy to deal with their crazy antics right now. Okay? Thank you, Gwendolyn," he purred, leaning down to brush her cheek with a quick kiss before turning and leaving her at the doorway of the second conference room where lunch had been set up for the board.
He could feel her eyes following him down the corridor as he headed for the elevator, and he offered her a wink and a wave as the metal door slid shut in front of him before slumping back against the wall of the tiny box, grateful that her keen sense of perception had not picked up on the fact that he had been counting down the seconds until he could get back to his office, and to the secretary he had left there.
