Hiromu Arakawa nasce l'8 maggio 1973 nella provincia di Hokkaido. La sua infanzia la trascorre nella fattoria di famiglia crescendo già con l'idea di voler diventare da grande mangaka. Arakawa inizia lavorare nel 1999 come assistente di Eto Hiroyuki per la stesura dell'opera Guru Guru-il girotondo della magia. Sebbene la sua carriera abbia avuto inizio con la stesura dell'opera Astrid Olga, in realtà, la fumettista è conosciuta dal grande pubblico per l'opera Fullmetal Alchemist. Su quest'opera venne creata una serie anime anche se, in realtà, non seguiva la storia
