GEORGE ORWELL: A Life of Resistance, Influence, and Enduring Relevance (British Author)
George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair on June 25, 1903 in Motihari, Bengal, which was then part of British India. He was the son of Richard Walmesley Blair, a British civil servant in the Indian Imperial Police, and Ida Mabel Limouzin, the daughter of a French tobacco merchant.
Orwell's family background was firmly rooted in the British colonial establishment. His father's side of the family had long served in the Indian civil service, while his mother's family were prosperous merchants. However, the Blairs were not considered part of the upper echelons of colonial society, lacking the wealth and status of the true ruling elite.
