The rules of humanity have changed. Dread and death are the new pastimes. A force lurking beneath the once bustling streets has risen to the surface. "Gobbos," in the parlance of the day. They raid villages and kidnap children for their debaucherous purposes. A clearly defined villain.
Two unwilling souls, a world apart, confront this evil. But all is not as it seems. As the nature of the world reveals itself to them, they find the enemy is no different from themselves.
After nearly losing her life to a goblin attack, a farmgirl, Sarah, is confronted by the goblin that attacked her. In an attempt to seek revenge gone awry, she tells a series of lies, lest she be punished by her parents, that lead to her being ripped away from her home. But all is not bleak. She meets a colourful cast of characters that make her question if the plot twist that was her life was really all that bad.
The other protagonist, Lewis, a chubby rich boy, dreams of fire engulfing his town. When he awakes, he finds it to be true. With his parents dead, he is taken in by a friend of the family. He sneaks out and meets a goblin, though he doesn¿t know it at the time, and they become friends of sorts. However, the peace is disturbed once again. In a similar incident, his dream comes to life and his new home is burned as well. Luckily, his goblin friend saves him. He is taken to the goblin society where he meets his mentor. There the line between reality and dreams is blurred and he is left to question if anything he experiences is real, or if the distinction even matters.
