The story starts off with the prologue when Hadi, the antagonist, places a gun in the mouth of his best friend, Sabir, the narrating protagonist. This is the time when Hadi wants to take revenge upon the religion, Illumina, by burning all of the temples in the city of Murdon using the brainwashing powers of the Apple of Hades in his hands.
The story then rewinds back to the beginning, in the story of Sabir's father, Malik, and the love he had for someone named Ranya. Malik and his good friend, Saif, work together in a hookah café to raise money for college. Then a shaman, a religious leader of Illumina, finds weed in the kitchen of the shop while Saif was working, and then Saif gets burned alive at the Altar of Arcas. Witnessing this, Malik simply remains silent and continues his work at the hookah café.
After finishing college, Malik marries Ranya and they beget their first child, Altair. Altair, as a curious child, keeps reading books about Illumina, but constantly doubts that the prophet, Mazin, ascended to heaven to receive the Will of Arcas from the god, Arcas, which contains the ten Laws of Yghoul, which if disobeyed, could have a person burned alive at the Altar of Arcas. Eventually, after Sabir is born into the family, Altair finds the red books of blasphemy that Malik has been hiding in the attic of the house, gets caught reading them by a shaman, and then gets burned alive. Malik shouts out blasphemies in front of the leader, Kamil, and then he and Ranya get killed. Sabir goes to the orphanage.
Sabir meets Hadi in the orphanage, and when they reach twenty, they escape Murdon to the Outskirts, where they drink in Omar's bar, fight in Majd's arena, and have sex with prostitutes in Ali's whorehouse. Sabir's main goal is to find the truth of existence, while Hadi's is to live wild and elated through self-destruction, his main inner philosophy. Sabir breaks up with his sweetheart, Rana, after she finds out that he's been whoring around in the Outskirts.
Sabir tries to commit suicide after losing his love, but is stopped by Hadi, and they once again venture through the Outskirts. Eventually, they find a place where suicide volunteers from Murdon go to get beheaded. Sabir finds Rana there, and she tells him that her father committed suicide back at Murdon after losing his wife long ago. Sabir and Rana get back together, and they go back to Omar's Bar with Hadi. Rana and Sabir decide to end the religious oppression at Murdon and go to Omran's library where they obtain a book called the Book of Spells. They go back to Omar's bar where Hadi is, and when Sabir looks at Rana after reading the spells in the book, Hadi snatches the book away from him and reads the Antichrist Spell and obtains the Apple of Hades. Sabir, having memorized the Immunity Spell, tells Rana to repeat the words of the spell after him. They then only remain hostages of Hadi's gun.
With the Apple of Hades, Hadi brainwashes and recruits pawns from all over the Outrskirts and head towards Murdon, where Hadi causes extreme destruction. Hadi ties Sabir and Rana to chairs in a room on top of Murdon Tower, where the prologue takes place, and then goes back down to complete his mission of destruction, which is his main goal for living. He goes to Murdon General Hospital, where at the psych-ward he reassures the patients that life is full of suffering, and to the terminally ill patients with cancer telling them that if you're going to die very soon, then reveal your wildest side to the world as you aid me in my project of destruction. He also goes to Murdon University, where he blasts into a lecture room, and with the use of his gun, provokes thought into the students about how formal education is meant to breed obedient workers out of them, and inspires no real environment in which the students can find the passions they were meant to practice.
