Annie's gaze drifted across to the defense table, where the accused sat, charged with two vicious homicides. Her green eyes narrowed when they met the dark stare of Mitch McClintock, the defendant's attorney. He continued to hold eye contact with her until Annie had to look away. Something about his bold look flustered her and she couldn't come up with a reason for it.
She had noticed how Mitch McClintock entered the courtroom earlier dressed to the hilt in a gray Armani suit. Annie watched several people turn in their seats to gawk at him.
She had to admit she'd been guilty of the same reaction. He did look impressive, emanating a Godlike aura. She continued watching him until he claimed a chair at the defense table.
This was her first encounter with Mitch McClintock, a high-priced New York City attorney. From reading reports on him, she knew he was ruthless in how he managed to get his clients off.
She had to admit he was handsome, and how bowled over she had felt when he first walked into the courtroom earlier. No, this wasn't the way she wanted to think of the man she would have to face for the next few weeks in a grueling battle. He had her blood stirring and she couldn't control the excitement filling her.
"Mr. McClintock," Judge Boil's voice thundered through the room again, startling Annie out of her private thoughts. "Is it true that you didn't provide the prosecution any discovery material?"
Mitch McClintock stood to his full height, which looked more than six feet to Annie. "I'm afraid it is," he confessed. "This is my first day in Chicago and I haven't had a chance to sort through any of the documents gathered by my predecessor. Ms Calahan should have more patience because I'm going to see she gets everything she deserves." His gaze traveled across the room remaining on Annie for several long seconds. Soon he looked back at the judge. "My client's life is in jeopardy, and he doesn't need more jail time waiting out continuances."
Annie listened quietly, fuming inwardly over the way Mitch McClintock tried manipulating the judge to agree with him. His phrase about getting what she deserved almost held a double meaning.
