In November 2015, Drs. Ashok and Daksha Patel celebrated a number of milestones: fifty years of residency in the U.S., fifty years of marriage, and fifty years of practicing medicine.

Healing a Broken Promise follows their fifty year journey in the United States, which included raising two children while juggling demanding careers.

The couple promised their families and communities that they would eventually return to India. However, fifty years later, their journey failed to take them back home.

Their story details their triumphs and tribulations in a foreign land, the passage of life, and their regrets of not fulfilling a pledge.

About the Author

Drs. Ashok and Daksha Patel were born in India. They later migrated to the U.S. to complete their medical education and training.

Ashok is a board-certified internist with certifications in hematology and oncology. He is also an assistant professor of internal medicine at Rush Medical Center.

Daksha is a pediatrician with subspecialty training in neonatology. She is also an assistant professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University.
