It is November 1949 and Trudi has just been released from Russia after 58 months of imprisonment. What does her future hold in post World War II Germany?
Excerpt from Heart of the Matter:
" . . . I feel uncomfortably conspicuous with my plain, rustic-looking wooden suitcase. I hardly need a suitcase since the only other item of clothing I own is a Russian quilted jacket and working pants, my good-bye "gift" from the Russian authorities.
Why had I kept these Russian clothes, these obvious symbols or relics of prison life? Steel grey and not very flattering, but warm and new. The only new clothing I had received during my fifty-eight months in Russia. October was cold in Russia and we had been issued new clothing because the Russian authorities wanted us to look "neat and orderly" upon our arrival in Germany. At least, that's what was said.
Perhaps I will need these clothes to prove to someone one day that yes, indeed, I had been there."
