Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832 1899) was a prolific American author of the 19-th century. His writings were characterized by the "rags-to-riches" narrative, which had a formative effect on America during the Gilded Age. Alger best known for his many juvenile novels about impoverished boys and their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of middle-class security and comfort through hard work, determination, courage, and honesty.
Herbert Carter's Legacy is the eighth and final story of the Luck and Pluck series. If you have read all the stories attentively you cannot fail to have discovered that there is one general idea pervading them all. All heroes are differently situated, and are led into different paths, but all of them are meeting life manfully, and overcoming by pluck and patience the obstacles which they find in their way. Those who sit down, and wait passively for fortune to shower her gifts upon them, are likely to wait a long time.
