Best known for her short story The Yellow Wallpaper, feminist author Charlotte Perkins Gilman explores the idea of what an all-female society could look like. Chasing a rumour of a country where men have not been seen in over two thousand years, three male explorers set out to discover uncharted land where the only inhabitants are women. They discover a peaceful, utopia-like world where education is sought-after and motherhood is considered the ultimate achievement which forces the men to re-examine their perceptions of traditional gender roles.
Herland showcases Perkins Gilman's belief that the society of her time did not allow women to reach their full potential by restricting them to the domestic sphere. A pioneer of feminist science fiction, her works have influenced modern feminist authors such as Margaret Atwood and Ursula K. LeGuin.
