Ruby Rose Starling left her Appalachian Mountain to pursue a meaningful life in the 1890's. But when she returns home for a visit, she is soon captivated by a man she meets at a shivaree.
In a whirlwind affair, she falls in love with Zeke McAllister, then learns who his family is. Nothing can ever become of their romance, and she does everything to stop his pursuit of her.
