I sat down at the stone table in my backyard. I handed a bottle of beer across the table to Ed Spencer. Ed was my new neighbor. He was a middle-aged guy with white hair and a friendly smile. He looked like a chubby nerd all grown up. He was wearing khakis and a polo shirt with vertical blue and white stripes.
"Beautiful day," Ed said.
I nodded and sipped my beer. He was right, it was in the high-eighties, not too humid, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Another beautiful day in the suburbs of Deerfield.
"What do you do for a living, Ed?"
Ed sat his beer on the stone table. "I'm kind of a financial whiz, how about you?"
"Writer," I said. "And I got lucky and made a good bit of cash last year the old fashioned way."
"How's that?"
"Inherited it."
Ed burst out laughing. "I think I'm going to like you as a neighbor, Mike Dailey."

Ed started ringing. He pulled a cell phone out of his pants pocket and answered it. "Hi, sweetie."
It must've been his wife. I hadn't met her.

Ed covered the phone with his left hand. "Mike, would it be a problem if my daughter swung by. I'd love for you to meet her, she's a super sweet girl."

Ed uncovered the phone and put it back to his ear. "He says that's fine, sweetie. Come on byokay, love you. Bye."
Ed put the phone back in his pocket. "My daughter, Whitney." He smiled and pointed at the phone in his pocket. "Seems her plans got canceled at the last minute. She's great, you'll just love her."
"I'm sure I will," I said.
"She's eighteen, taking a year off, calls it a gap year or something. She'll be starting college next fall. Poor kid has no idea what she wants to do. I told her to go into finance like her old man. She looked at me like she'd just bit into a rotten apple full of worms."
I wanted to say she sounded like a brat so I just smiled at Ed.
"Daughters," Ed said. "They can be a handful."
"I bet," I was almost done with my beer, ready to get this meet and greet over with.
"But like I said, you'll love her."
I leaned back in my chair and looked out over the pool. I planned on swimming today. That wasn't going to happen. It was getting late. After Ed and his daughter leave I might have another beer and crash in front of the television. I had been working hard on a big project this morning. When I had a deadline I needed to meet I got up early and finished my work before lunch.
A car door slammed outside the fence.
"That must be her," Ed slid out of his chair and jogged to the fence. He opened the gate and waved both hands over his head like a doofus. "Whitney, over here."
I stood up and walked over to the gate. Based on Ed's looks I expected a dumpy girl with a round face.
