Few people have loomed ominously or cast a shadow as dark in the stormy history of contemporary Africa as General Idi Amin of Uganda. Amin was raised from modest beginnings to become one of the most infamous tyrants on the continent. He was born in the early 1920s in the isolated West Nile region of Uganda.

Amin was a tall and formidable man whose early years had been characterized by a blend of charm, ruthlessness, and ambition. He joined the British colonial army's King's African Rifles (KAR) regiment and soon made a name for himself as a brave and very skilled soldier, gaining him promotions and the respect of his superiors.

But it was his contribution to Ugandan politics after independence that would really cede Amin's reputation. A period of horror and savagery ensued, which would eventually characterize Amin's leadership. His dictatorship was distinguished by a cult of personality and a contempt for fundamental democratic standards, and it was typified by extensive violations of human rights, persecution of ethnic groups, and economic incompetence.

In 1971, General Idi Amin seized power from the elected government of Milton Obote and proclaimed himself president of Uganda, initiating a brutal eight-year rule during which about 300,000 civilians were killed. In 1972, his decision to expel all Indian and Pakistani citizens, combined with rising military spending, led to the country's long-lasting economic downturn. In 1979, Ugandan exiles and Tanzanians seized control of the capital city of Kampala, leading to the end of Amin's rule and his subsequent escape. He was never held accountable for his atrocious offenses.

But Amin's story is not only one of despotism, despite the atrocities of his reign. It is the tale of a complicated and contradictory guy who was capable of horrible atrocities as well as acts of charity and goodwill.
