There was once an epoch when the internet did not overshadow our lives, a time when magazines and videos dominated the mass media market.
Eighteen-year-old student Melanie Atchison is a product of her generation, living in a world of economic and political upheaval, a world dominated by Cold War tensions.
Of course, everyday life goes on, and Mel is a naturally ambitious and intelligent woman.
Melanie enters the world of glamour modelling imbued with self-sustaining confidence and a conviction that the world is doomed to thermonuclear destruction. The first facet of her persona nourishes her ambitions for fame and fortune, the other precludes her from any sense of responsibility for her actions.
All in all, it is a win-win situation for her manager, photographer, and adult film producer, Robert Krieger.
Robert cherishes his own ambitions to launch Manyfold, a magazine that will feature articles about the world of comtemporary living combined with a glamour model centrefold and celebrity nude pictorials.
Mel Atchison is Robert's desired first centrefold and former Olympic swimmer, Annabel Devlin, his first nude celebrity.
For Mel, the rite of passage is simple. For those around her, life is not quite that straightforward.
College student Mel's ambitions for instant fame and fortune are in part unintentionally fostered by college deputy head, Courtney Fellows. Mel is a member of Courtney's thespian troupe and Miss Fellows feels naturally protective towards her student when Mel duly appears as a magazine centrefold and subsequently abandons her studies.
Courtney vows to confront Robert Krieger and not unnaturally, family tensions arise within the Atchison household. It falls upon Sylvia, Melanie's Dutch-born mother, to handle the situation in a manner that many of her nursing associates would fail to anticipate.
A contentious question arises.
Is uninhibited behaviour worse for being performed in a public arena? Or is it actually more scrupulous than similar deeds performed in privacy?
This novel features the world of glamour modelling and adult movies and consequently contains unavoidable depictions of nudity and acts of an adult nature.
