Karen's Story: A Dream of Tentacles

Anna has been having strange, erotic dreams---being bound and held captive by an alien creature with many tentacles and being probed and fondled by its appendages. Anna has invited Karen to spend the night so that, perhaps, Karen might experience the dream too. Karen wonders if Anna's suggestion is actually a disguised invitation for a lesbian hook-up. In either case, she's interested.

This short story is a retelling from Karen's perspective of one of the episodes in Being, Bondage, and Nothingness, the first book of The Tentacles of Chaos. In Being, Bondage, and Nothingness, we meet Anna and Mark, a successful, happily married couple with two young daughters. However, all is not as it seems. Anna has strange, erotic dreams, or at least they appear to be dreams. Then Anna disappears leaving Mark to figure out how to move forward with his life and care for the children. And deal with the police.

Mark is the only suspect the police consider as they try to solve the case of Anna's disappearance. Eventually, Mark hires a young woman to help him with the girls. But she seems to have her own unusual interests. Anna may have undergone a transformation. Between pressure from the police and the attentions of the nanny, Mark may be slipping into sensual escapism. Where did Anna go? What will happen to Mark and the children she left behind? And what is Aimee, the nanny, up to?

After returning from a lengthy captivity, Anna must set her house in order, answer the questions of the police, try to discover why she was taken by the creature, and come to terms with the transformation she has undergone.
