The name "Kursk" itself doesn't have a specific meaning in mordern Russian, but it is thought to derive from the name of the Kur River, which flows through the area. The city's history dates back many centuries, and it has been an important regional center in various periods of Russian history.

The Soviet Union emerged victorious in the engagement of Kursk, a significant engagement fought in the summer of 1943 in southwest Russia, between the armies of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The largest-ever military engagement in history was the Battle of Kursk.
Hitler's response to his crushing defeat at the Battle of Stalingrad by the Soviet Red Army, "Operation Citadel", saw Germany start the Battle of Kursk on July 5, 1943, in the vicinity of the Soviet city of Kursk in western Russia. The battle would be Germany's last blitzkrieg onslaught and their last opportunity to recover control of the Eastern Front during World War II.
