Byron discovered the form for his best poem, Don Juan, a satire in the guise of a picaresque verse story, in the light, mock-heroic writing of Beppo. Don Juan's first two cantos were started in 1818 and released in July of 1819. The renowned libertine Don Juan was converted by Byron into a simple, innocent young man who, despite his joyful surrender to the attractive ladies who woo him, still serves as a reasonable standard by which to measure the oddities and irrationalities of the outside world.
