Perhaps it was the timing of their meeting or the challenges they faced being from very different cultures, that kept them at a distance.

Even many years later in life as he found himself on assignment in Africa, he wrote to Katherine to describe the rich surroundings of the African continent, his consuming loneliness, and to reaffirm his undying affection for her.

Katherine and her sister, Thalia, moved to Chicago in the following years, and given her beauty, Katherine soon found work as a model on trendy Michigan Avenue. She and Thalia traveled the world together, and all along the way the letters from Nick would find them.
