Everybody dies and we wonder what happens after death. The four last things are death, judgment heaven, and hell. Contrary to the religious belief that hell is a burning fire that burns unworthy souls, this novel presents the picture of hell as a state of remorse having missed the beatific vision. Therefore, it explains heaven and hell as a state and not a place.
The first seven chapters narrate the existence of eight souls in a realm where they await judgment after they have left their corruptible bodies upon death.
To give a vivid explanation, the last seven chapters of the novel tell a short story about eight people as they live their lives to reflect the seven deadly sins which are: pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony, and sloth.
Donald who wishes to embezzle his state fund as a governor is greedy.
Philip as a thief is an alcoholic and a glutton.
Priscilla who is raped becomes pregnant. She channels her grievance and anger on Cordelier who is born as the result of the rape. Priscilla is filled with wrath.
Anselm who is a pastor feels on top of the world because of the gift of healing. He becomes proud and arrogant.
Theodore who is a wizard is threatened seeing others excel. He kills Michael being ungrateful for his kindness and generosity. He is envious.
Philip uses his resources to take advantage of ladies. He rapes Priscilla. He is lustful.
Duke feels God fails him. He lost the love of his life after praying and fasting so he becomes angry with God. He is slothful as he chooses to procrastinate than to accept God¿s existence.
