Sankaran Namboothiri was an orthodox Brahmin and a feudal landlord. In his community, only the eldest son was permitted to marry Namboothiri women and only their children legitimized as Namboothiris. The younger sons were only permitted to engage in live-in relationships with women belonging to lower castes.
