For as long as she could remember, Elle Smith bounced from foster home to foster home after being found wandering the streets as a kid with no memories of who she was or where she belonged. She'd learned long ago not to get her hopes up to find a home that would last. She was just too different, too difficult for normal families to deal with. No one wanted to deal with her extreme nightmares or vivid hallucinations.

When one of these episodes caused Elle to accidentally send her foster sister to the hospital, it was the last straw. She became unplaceable. Unwanted even more. Entering the hospital was only the beginning of the events that would change Elle's life, where an unexpected friendship and magic would save Elle from an appalling treatment and send her to a world that held the answer to the question she longed to know. Even though this new world gave her the acceptance, belonging, and a love she'd longed for, something still threatened her newfound happiness; whoever orchestrated her disappearance as a child was still out there.
