Johnny is like most other 10-year-old boys in 1979, hanging out with friends, getting into minor trouble, and figuring out the balance of still enjoying childhood while trying to act like a 'man'. That is, until Johnny and his friends break into their school one night and find something they shouldn't have: their principal's dead body.
With Johnny's mom missing and nowhere else to go, Johnny and his best friend Danny turn to Johnny's mysterious and self-centered grandmother, Vicky. She takes them on a cross country journey to an unknown location, giving up no information on where or why. Johnny is left wondering where they are going, what happened to his mom, and if his life will ever be the same again.
