While "Lost Face" is actually the title of a collection of short stories, not a single book, the title story itself revolves around an unnamed European adventurer captured by a Native American tribe in the Yukon. Facing potential torture, he cleverly deceives them into believing he possesses medicine that renders him immune to pain. His captors, not wanting to waste their efforts, spare him and allow him to leave. This act of outsmarting them, however, comes at a cost. The story ends with the protagonist, forever marked as "Lost Face," ostracized by the tribe and his reputation shattered.
