When Rheingold Beer was mentioned in one of my grandmother's memoirs, I googled it to find out the correct spelling. Only to find out, it was a Jewish American beer company introduced in 1883, that held 35% of New York State's beer market in the 50's and 60's. Rheingold beer was one of the only advertisers that sponsored Nat King Cole, and also Jackie Robinson's radio show. I also learned that clean-up crews found Rheingold beer cans in the rubble of the World Trade center towers after the terrors of 9-11.
We all have a grandmother. Whether she is a buffer for overbearing parents, a guardian for missing parents, or just your secret supplier of candy out of her candy jar. Known as the microwaveable and Googling generation, we forget the power of storytelling and family tradition. Cliches that are often overlooked are:
"In order to know where you're going, you have to know where you come from!" "You wanna hide information, put it in a book!"
Memoirs Of My Grandmother is a legacy piece , to be passed down through generations. It chronicles the life of the granddaughter of an overseer, leaving the post- slavery environment of the South, to the hustle, bustle, and boom of the North(N.Y.C).
It details her life following the Great Depression, through World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the "War on drugs". These memoirs also explore Music of all genres throughout the 50's,60's,70's, 80's, and the impact it had on culture. As well as monumental family events and moments that would impact generations to come.
