With her sisters now grown, and her mother passed on, Jane senses she faces her last winter in her family's home. She plans to move on soon and find work, perhaps as a governess.

She wants to make this Christmas season a really special one for her family, but puts no thought into what she wants for herself as a gift.

Until a handsome stranger named Nicholas--apparently an old friend of her father's--shows up on her front porch.
