Memories from Australia Book 8. The previous book of the Australia series was based on a trip to the top of the Northern Territory. This book is as far south as you can go in the country: off the bottom of the island, in fact. Once called Van Diemen's Land, but was subsequently and currently known as Tasmania: after Abel Tasman who actually landed on the island, rather than the administrator who sent him! It is located some 240 km south of the mainland, and has a unique wildlife and some spectacular scenery: not all natural, though. This volume covers a specific trip to explore some regions of the island in greater detail than had been done before. It starts covering the capital of the State of Tasmania: Hobart. This small city has some of its notorious penal past still around. The coincidental inclusion of some of the worst places (Port Arthur, which is seen from the boat, and Macquarie Harbour) for convicts wasn't the reason for the trip. The very south of Tasmania is a spectacular series of sea cliffs and stretches of basalt columns; to see it you must go on a cruise in a fast boat. That was the first trip and the photographs taken show this part of the world as being pretty rugged and isolated. Our first attempt was thwarted by bad weather, but we were recommended by the cruise office to transfer to the next day: a wonderful choice as it turned out! You can walk to this part of the coast, but you wouldn't see the cliffs, so by sea is best. There is a 100 MB limit on eBooks and so the number of images in the book is limited. Hopefully readers will get a 'taste' of this amazingly varied countryside occupying the centre of the largest island on earth and the 7th largest continent. Have a read and enjoy the 101 still images and 2 short video clips (one to prove how big the swell was) each with an accompanying explanatory page of text. The word 'unique' is oft used, mainly misused, but the coastline covered might just be so! Have a read and hopefully enjoy some of the outstanding wildlife, scenery and vegetation of the island to the south of this fascinating country.
