A new definition of drug and alcohol dependence and treatment - substance abuse has no social boundaries
The addict is not considered an addict just because he drinks and drugs too much, nor because his life spiraled down due to drugs. These are just the predictable symptoms of progressive disease. Perhaps if we had a new definition of addiction, it would not be so difficult to accept that individuals may suffer from a disease that ultimately destroys their lives.
We have all heard that addiction is a disease, but how do we really feel about this? When you hear the word "addict", do you think of an addict, an addict, a prostitute, or a homeless person asking for money in a street corner?
