Written by economist Gesner Oliveira and business administrator Artur Villela Ferreira, Neither Negationism nor Apocalypse: Environmental Economics from a Brazilian Perspective presents, for the first time, principles and practices of environmental economics based on the Brazilian experience.

The book is divided into two parts: the first one introduces the reader to general concepts of environmental economics; the second one presents practices and trends for the future.

Aware that the natural resources available in the planet are scarce, the authors discard both the posture of the "wizard" for whom human technology is capable of solving all problems related to the scarcity of resources and the posture of the "prophet" apocalyptic, advocating a radical reduction in consumption patterns.

This research work covers topics such as sustainability, the importance of free competition for the preservation of the environment, ESG criteria environment, social and governance for evaluating companies, land use, transport and urban mobility, electricity generation, sanitation basics, construction and infrastructure, production and industry.

THE AUTHORS

Ph.D. in economics from the University of California (Berkeley), Gesner Oliveira is a professor at Fundação Getulio Vargas, where he coordinates the Center for Environmental Infrastructure and Solutions Studies and a partner at GO Associados. He chaired Sabesp (2007-2011), having received the PNBE Environmental Entrepreneur Award (2009). During his tenure, the company created an environment area, became part of the Economic Sustainability Index (ISE) and launched a platform for environmental solutions. Gesner worked in different areas of public policy, having been president of Cade (1996-2000), secretary of Economic Monitoring of the Ministry of Finance (1995) and assistant secretary of Economic Policy (1993-1995). Certified by the Brazilian Institute of Corporate Governance as an independent member of boards and as a member of the Audit Committee (CCoAud+IBGC), he has served on several boards of public and private companies.

Business administrator with an emphasis on sustainability and environment from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (EAESP/FGV), Artur Villela Ferreira is a founding partner at Global Forest Bond and researcher at the Center for the Study of Infrastructure and Environmental Solutions at EAESP/FGV. He is part of the technical team of the Brazil Sanitation Panel and was the TA to the Introduction to Information Technology (2011) and Environmental Economics (2015-2016) courses at EAESP/FGV. He collaborated with technical and research support for the book For a More Sustainable São Paulo, by Gilberto Natalini and Marcelo Morgado.
