This is the third book in the Jack Harwood series of short stories, I would suggest you read the stories in sequence. Below in a brief background on the main character.

Jack Harwood was an only child who spent his childhood shuffling between his parent's various homes in Europe and his Aunt Charlotte's house in Suffolk. Completing his early education in Europe, Jack grew into a self-assured child, happy in his own company.

He was fifteen when his parents died in a motoring accident in France. After their death he went to live with his Aunt Charlotte his only living relative. His Aunt died in his second year at Oxford. Jack graduated with no real career plans and an inheritance sufficient to provide for his basic needs.

Jack left Oxford with an arts degree and no idea of what he wanted. When the war started, he joined the air force as a fighter pilot and by 1943 held the rank of Wing Commander. That year - as a result of an incident over Northern France - he was seconded into Military Intelligence. Jack spoke both French and German fluently, skills not required by a pilot but - at that time - desperately needed by Military Intelligence. He spent the rest of the war working with MI5. In 1946 he was stood down from MI5 and put on the reserve list.

Jack returned to live in his house in Suffolk and happily settled into village life, supplementing his income by writing. His quiet peaceful life is shattered when his friend is murdered, and he is recalled to MI5.

This book comprises of a few post war stories about Jack's adventures as a reluctant member of British Military Intelligence.
