This is an adventure-romance novel written by Louis Becke. The story begins by introducing us to Denison, who is visiting the house of one of the traders, Randle, on an island. Denison plans to go on a day of shooting and invites Randle to join him, but Randle can't spare the time and instead invites his children, Hester, Kate, and Harry, to go with Denison. Later, Randle's children take Denison to visit an old woman named Mary, who lives in the mountain forest. They tell Denison that Mary is a good and brave woman that they all love and that she had been like a second mother to them since their mother died in Samoa.
