Outsiders in Sault Ste. Marie

As a small and isolated Northern Ontario city, Sault Ste. Marie has a very strong sense of community. But this community does not always rush to include everyone, leaving plenty of residents feeling like outsiders. This book analyzes why some groups of people have a harder time belonging to Sault Ste. Marie than others. The author, an outsider who has spent seven years living in the community, collected the perspectives of various members of marginalized groups to better understand what prevents them from feeling at home in the city. He examines how the social tensions and feelings of dissatisfaction harm the city and its attempt to develop and grow. The book also describes the city and some of its noticeable systemic and structural issues that bother those who do not accept them as the "norm." With many questions asked, this book tries to promote the changes already affecting Northern Ontario communities, such as discussions about the lack of inclusion, and challenge the tendencies of the community to reject cultural, intellectual, and social diversity.
