Africa is blessed with 54 independent countries filled with natural and human resources as well as investment-worthy attractions. However, for all the special and admirable qualities of this continent, there is an obvious challenge of poor governance.
To put it in perspective, there is an inability to manage the resources of the people in a country and consequently the country itself. Government is the machinery by which law and order is maintained in all matters of human existence. Therefore, the lack of good governance is simply mismanagement, characterized by arbitrary leadership, disregard for the law, institutional failure, and so on. In its parts, Africa (represented by countries) has been beset by leaders no longer compatible with the purpose of government formation and good governance.Bad governance is due to various factors and this article will briefly review the trend of bad governance in Africa, highlight the causes of bad governance and its effects, and recommend possible solutions.
Given the multitude of laws and institutions with local and international influence, African states should have the wherewithal to set the pace for fair and just governance.
