Penicillin cream, was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928. Fleming, a Scottish bacteriologist, observed that a mold (later identified as Penicillium notatum) had killed the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus on a petri dish in his laboratory. This led to the discovery of penicillin, the world's first antibiotic.
The development of penicillin into various forms, including creams, came later. Penicillin and its derivatives have been used in various topical formulations to treat bacterial infections of the skin, though today, other antibiotics are often preferred for topical use.
