The pancreas is a vital organ located in the upper abdomen, behind the stomach and in front of the spine. It plays a crucial role in both the endocrine and exocrine systems, making it a unique and multifunctional organ within the human body. The pancreas is responsible for producing and releasing several essential hormones and enzymes that aid in digestion and regulate blood sugar levels.

Anatomy of the Pancreas

The pancreas is approximately six to ten inches long and is shaped like a narrow, flattened pear. It is divided into three part: the head, body, and tail. The head of the pancreas is connected to the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum, while the tail extends towards the left side of the abdomen.

Within the pancreas, there are specialized clusters of cells called islets of Langerhans, which are responsible for the endocrine functions of the organ. These islets contain different types of cells, including beta cells that produce insulin, alpha cells that produce glucagon, and delta cells that produce somatostatin.
