Madeline Dubois is fifty years old and pregnant and the people in the village of Hastings are shocked. Everyone speculates about who the father might be and they're wrong. But Madeline's murder is not the last one. Two other citizens are murdered and the village is in a panic. Abbott interrogates everyone in the village and soon narrows the search. It takes patience and persistence from the chief of police to finally get the killer and bring stability to Hastings.
