James and Alice are dedicated cross-country runners. Unknown to each other, they set out from different locations with the intention of trail running in the Scottish Highlands. Against the advice of her mother and uncle, Alice is determined to travel to Inverness and then run partway down the Great Glen before cutting west to join the arduous Cape Wrath Trail to the north-western extremity of the Scottish mainland. James' plans are not nearly so well organized; in fact he would be happy to run in any mountainous area that offered challenging slopes and beautiful scenery. All this changes when, even before boarding the northbound train, he almost literally bumps into Alice. One glance and he is smitten. Is everything that follows a strange series of happenstances or are they God-incidences? Only the reader can decide.
