It would not be an exaggeration for most of the salaried employees to live for the day they get paid. It was even truer for the story's hero. Like everybody else, about a third of his paycheck was automatically deducted by taxes and various membership fees. What's more, he had an enormous debt to pay off. That's the main reason why his wife was constantly nagging him on the payday. The debt was not his own, but was originated from his underwriting a colleague's debts. That's why his payday was a gloomy day for him. But on one particular payday, he had a stroke of luck. He found he had free money on his paycheck. What a lucky day! His sad payday finally became a happy day.
