The Hebrew word for peace is Shalom which means: peace, happy, health, prosperity, restoration, wholeness, well, safe. Gideon had the restoration of the land of Israel which was occupied by the Midianites, they could dwell safely within their borders when they defeated the Midianites. The Lord is our peace, we do not have to fear our enemies any more, or fear the wrath of God anymore, God has not given us the Spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound mind. The fear of God that we are to have is a reverential fear, the reverential fear that a son or daughter has for his or her father. Peace does not means absence of conflict or war, for when Jehovah-Shalom appeared to Gideon it was to send him to war against the enemies of the Jews. Jehovah-Shalom will give you rest from your enemies around you and will utterly destroy them.
