Peterborough United: The Modern Era 1973-2000

After many years knocking on the door, only to see it rammed in their faces, Peterborough United were finally elected to the Football League in 1960. Once admitted, the new boys prospered, lifting the Fourth Division title at the first attempt in record-breaking style, averaging 14,000 home crowds along the way. But the good times came to an end in unceremonious fashion in 1968 when the club were demoted to the Fourth Division for financial irregularities. This book commences in 1973-74, when manager Noel Cantwell inspired Posh to the Fourth Division championship, thus laying the ghosts of the previous decade, but it was not long before the hard times returned. The 1990s saw a dramatic upturn following the appointment as manager of former playing legend Chris Turner, who guided the club to two successive promotions. Peterborough had never had it so good. Sadly, the joy was to be short-lived and two relegations followed over the next few seasons. Not even the arrival as manager of Barry Fry one of the most colourful characters in the modern game could arrest the slide into soccers basement. But just as fans were giving up hope of a team to be proud of, Posh celebrated the new millennium by clinching promotion to Division Two. So what does the future hold for Posh? One thing is for sure.
