We didn't often get dimensional rifts on Earth, but when they happened, they were big. Could be an invasion from a different timeline. Maybe some magic realm was in danger and in need of a secret weapon or champion. Stranger things had happened before. Either way, it usually meant a lot of overtime, paperwork, and, if we weren't careful, deaths.

" missed this place. The faded wooden fence around this little farm held all my most precious memories. I had no greater joy as a child than spending the weekends here with my grandparents. Everything was magical here, the trees, the pond, the cows, and the horses. It was a little girl's dream.

Of course, there was nothing more magical here than my granddad. Some people just have something extra that seems to make them shine, and my grandad shone the brightest of anyone I've ever met.

The beast underneath had awoken from time to time over the centuries, usually spouting small outbursts of smoke and deadly rivers from the netherworld. But even through the frozen earth, I could feel its power in my bones.

She looks away from the stars and the rolling hills beyond and peers down. There, marching to the beat of the drums, is her kingdom's army. They march through the Darkkeeper's streets that weave between houses and shops.

Anger drips from every bone in her body. This is her father's war, and she wants no part of it, especially since the war involves someone she loves.
