After suffering the tragic loss of his mother, twelve-year-old Benjamin Simmons finds himself saddled with worriesand responsibilities. His father seems to erupt in anger more and more often at the slightest provocation when he isn't watching TV drunk or sleeping. Brianna, Ben's eight-year-old sister, is afraid of their father, desperately misses their mother, and looks to Ben for both protection and emotional support.

One afternoon, as Ben walks his usual route home along the edge of a vast wilderness called the Preserve, he discovers a strange rift in the air. He reaches out to touch it and watches in amazement as his arm is swallowed up. When he pulls his arm out, he finds it whole and unscathed.
With the help of his friends, Mahmoud and Remy, Ben sets off to discover what exactly is this hole in the woods. However, just as the three of them discover the rift is far more dangerous than they ever expected, Ben is confronted with another crisis, one will threaten everything and everyone he cares about.
