In 1879, Charles Peirce published a remarkable paper about a conformal map projection A QUINCUNCIAL PROJECTION OF THE SPHERE. In this paper, Peirce presented his projection of the sphere as that the Northern Hemisphere is in a square and the Southern Hemisphere is split into four isosceles triangles symmetrically surrounding the first one. His view of the sphere is a star-like projection. In Charles Peirce's presentation, the whole map is a square after the arrangement of five items in a quincunx.
