On this wintry December night in 1893, Millie had lots of time to think while waiting for his wife, Mina, to give birth. He was reminiscing how he and his family came from Canada to Michigan, as a young lad to settle on a farm west of Elsie.
He thoroughly enjoyed being a farmer and wanted a son to share his passion. Oh, he knew Mina and his daughter, Blanche, wanted a girl. Yet a boy could carry on the Setterington name, help on the farm and complete him as a man.
When he heard, "It's a boy!" Millie heaved a heavy sigh. He couldn't wait to hold his newborn son. He would name him Ralph, but call him Rate to honor his father Horatio. Now he could look forward to a full life as a man and father. He was filled with anticipation on this new chapter in his life.
