He wanted to call her and apologize to her for over-stepping his boundaries, wanted to beg her for another chance to prove that he was in fact the man he had professed himself to be. But the hands on the clock were already pointing toward one, and his conscience would not allow him to wake her at that hour.
However, the apology dried up on his tongue as he watched her sail into The Wilde Side almost forty minutes late the following afternoon, the very picture of carefree gaiety.
He had been going out of his mind calling her phone, and swearing aloud each time he got her voicemail, his gut tied into knots of fear and anxiety as he worried that something might have happened to her. He had stood at the door as he had every day for the week, waiting to meet her when she arrived. He had beaten a path between his office and the front door, checking to see if she was coming. He had debated with himself about driving over to her apartment to check on her, and had talked himself out of calling his brother and asking whether Kelly could get the police to drive over and check on her, although just barely.
And she possessed the sheer audacity to offer him a half-hearted shrug as she dropped her bag in the filing cabinet and tell him that she had 'lost track of time' while she was studying in the library? With Tony?
But, she appeared either not to notice or not to care about his anger as she flounced out of his office; and she ignored him with a totality which left him fuming as he followed her toward the bar, and the smiling bartender.
"Hey, Gar," she greeted him with her brightest smile. "You have time to do a quick stock check with me? I need to finish this order today, or we'll have a dry bar this weekend," she joked.
"You know I'll always make time for you," the sleazy little weasel replied with a toothy grin as he beckoned Julia off the floor.
He felt like an idiot standing beside the bar and listening to their conversation, and he was almost certain that his mouth was hanging open by at least an inch, maybe more.
Was she really that upset because he had dared to touch her breast? Her breast hadn't minded, judging by her nipple's instant reaction to his touch. And besides, she was his girlfriend. He was entitled to a cop a little feel every once in a while, he reassured himself as he made the conscious decision not to question when exactly she had become his 'girlfriend'.
