The Sun has been destroyed. Trapped in an icy wasteland, humanity survives by the heat of The Sun Shards.

Sigrun is done with looking after cows and partying every week, she wants to make a name for herself within her nomadic tribe. To her amazement, she gets her chance when she impresses a tribal elder enough he nominates her to be the next Jarl. However, her new role as leader plunges her into a political minefield. The previous Jarl, Hannes, is angry at being supplanted. Sigrun has to quickly learn how this new world of politics works to neutralise Hannes' remaining power, before his vengeance turns violent.

Sonja is done with the tribe's faith, she wants to love women and the faith look down on that. But her mother's will names her as the faith's leader. Sonja sees an opportunity to use the power to change the faithful's attitude and gain acceptance. But changing an ancient prejudice won't be easy, as Britta, who feels she should have been named leader instead, is determined to fight her.

Sigrun and Sonja meet, and they fall for each other. But the two women lead a tribe that is divided. The workers and the faith hate each other and seek completely opposite goals. but with only one Sun Shard they are stuck together. Can the power of Sigrun and Sonja's relationship bring the two sides together, or will the divisions of the tribe divide them?
