ROMANI TRILOGY: BOOK ONE
The settlement of St. Peter's Mill, built on the Grand River -which was once the Mississippi, south of what was once St. Louis- in the course of one week endures protests, bombings, assassinations, and a jailbreak all leading up to the inauguration of a new chancellor. The bloody week finally brings the tumultuous relationship between the English settlers of St. Peter¿s Mill and the area¿s native Romani G*psy population to a violent end.

Robert Ohlam, the disappointing son of a famous painter (and chocolate-maker) welcomes a premature son of his own. Riddled with medical bills and desperate to repair his reputation, he accepts a position as a Street Sweeper, agreeing to catch innocent Romani out after dark during the most dangerous time in the village¿s history.

Street Sweeper's manager Jonas Stratus is half-Romani. A charming and efficient tool for the fascist creators of the organization, he hires Robert despite his gentle nature, and at the request of an old friend.

Nina-Bella is a consummate protector of her people. She has studied the chocolate-maker¿s son, and considers him to be just the weak link within the Sweepers that she needs. She has to find a way into the inauguration to kill the new chancellor before retaliation can be ordered for the morning¿s impending jailbreak.

Romani suspect they are being baited by the lightened security, but have no choice with a dozen of their own -children, brothers and sisters, lovers, parents- heading for the firing squad. They find allies in the town's beloved priest, and in his oldest friend and former commanding officer, the even more beloved chocolate-maker, Fillip Ohlam.
