Sea Roads follows the changing fortunes of Alex Leith, a former fine art lecturer in middle age, who is leaving her home in North East England, her former life having collapsed around her. She drives her campervan northwards without any clear plan of where to go or what to do next other than to take time out for a photography trip in the spectacular landscape of the west coast of Scotland. A chance meeting with an intriguing but irascible man on his sail boat on the Ards peninsular sets them both on a journey of conflict, change and ultimately, reconciliation with the past. They both have become isolated by family ties and family secrets but they find each other and a sense of belonging in the Atlantic storms of the Scottish Highlands and the fjords of Norway. Their time together, like the Scottish weather, is unpredictable and subject to sudden squalls and like the tides, ebbs and flows.
