Sense and Sensibility, though not the first book Jane Austen wrote, it was the first to be published.
The story is set in Southwest of England and Kent, and it follows the two Dashwood sisters: Elinor and Marianne. Elinor is sensible and rational, whereas her younger sister is wildly romantic. Elinor finds a potential suitor called Edward Ferrars, and though Marianne states she "loves him tenderly," she finds him disappointing as a lover for her sister.
Soon, however, Marianne meets a man who measures up to her ideal a new neighbour, who just moved in, called Mr. Willoughby. So swept away by passion is Marianne that her behaviour begins to become scandalous. Meanwhile, Elinor's growing affection for Edward suffers when he admits to her that he is secretly engaged to a childhood sweetheart. Misfortunes and the lessons they draw is the spirit of the book that concludes with a happy ending.
